With just over 1,000 employees, we operate in 11 countries. Our team is part of Kiillo's Professional Hygiene business, where our mission is to develop the professional hygiene business in five different business segments.
New team, new ways of working
Our business is quite new and the whole team is completely new. Finding the right processes and best practices has taken time. We have been working completely remotely and have established team working practices both internally and with external networks within the company.
Our team works very little with each other, because everyone has their own responsibilities. However, we are united and have started to create ways to make use of each other's expertise within the team.
The simulation was aimed at developing teamwork and getting to know each other
The idea of SmoothTeam sounded good: through the game you can get a sense of what a team is like and what kind of people are in it. At the same time, we wanted to find new ways to improve the way the team works.
Supporting others is at the heart of our work and our goal. Even though we are in meetings together, the personal chemistry has been missing.
SmoothTeam brought us up to speed on the current state of our team
Together, the simulation helped us to better understand how our team works and to get to know each other. We also came up with solutions on what we could do to improve the way the team worked together.
The simulation was very well discussed, and it was also a lot of fun. We kept the cameras open and had live reactions and interactions. This, as well as a little gamification in the simulation, helped us to get deeper into what the team was doing at times.
The simulation got everyone involved
The simulation was an excellent experience, not only because there were no separate tasks for different team members, but because we did the whole journey together. This worked well, and as a chaperone it was great to see the whole team involved. The questions involved everyone and everyone participated - there was no one who was left out. Not once during the simulation was there a situation where "someone else makes the decisions" but everyone together. In group work, there is often someone who is louder and more dominant, leaving others on the sidelines, and the simulation was a positive exception to this.
The best part was the reactions of the team members
The best thing about the simulation was the immediate and real reactions of the team members. When we saw the team members' responses, reactions emerged, along with sincere questions and views that we discussed. It was really nice to hear the reasoning behind why a person would be suitable for a particular role. At the same time, there was spontaneous encouragement and good arguments were put forward. Spirits were high, smiles and laughs were had!
The simulation resulted in practical changes
The simulation left me with practical changes in the way the team works. For example, in a team meeting, we decided to change our joint meetings and have more frequent coffee breaks, which we see as an important place for interaction. I have also noticed spontaneous comments from the team about what kind of task suits each person, for example "you dare to take more risks, this is easy for you". So the simulation discussions were not forgotten, the lessons learned remain and have already changed the way we work together. We have also tested new practices on how team members spar with each other.
Effective processes are the key to clarity of work
A well-functioning team needs clear processes and responsibilities. These reduce uncertainty and allow everyone to find the right person to talk to about a particular issue. This is especially important for new people, and getting them on board quickly improves the whole team.
The simulation provides background insight into the organisation of the team's work
When a team is scattered and struggling to find ways to organise their work, simulation provides an excellent way to do this. Similarly, the fact that everyone had a voice in the simulation, got to know each other and had fun is very valuable for our future work together. The simulation was really good!
