Juho Uutela, Visma: SmoothTeam also opened up difficult topics of discussion

2021-02-08

We used SmoothTeam in the product development team developing a product called Tiima. Our team members live in different parts of Finland, so we've been doing a lot of remote work even before the epidemic. The SmoothTeam simulation also worked well remotely.

The simulation went smoothly

The simulation generated good discussion, even among a group that is sometimes harder to get to speak out loud. I particularly liked the open field where participants could post comments. This allows the facilitator to pick up topics for discussion from the quieter members.

We chose a simulation with an external facilitator and this was a good solution for us: I was able to play a small role as a pre-facilitator while the external facilitator helped the discussion.

As a tool, SmoothTeam is clear and can be used well by the less experienced. It guides you in a thoughtful way directly to the appropriate discussions and also to move forward. The simulation also limited the discussion appropriately and guided it to the necessary topics.

Simulation brought hidden issues to light

We were able to easily open up particularly difficult issues for further discussion. These are necessary discussions for the team, but they are easily left behind. They can be discussed in private, but there is usually a high threshold for bringing them into a common discussion.

As a first person, the essential thing for me is that all the topics of discussion came from people other than myself. These topics are now of common interest to our team and we will continue to discuss them after the simulation.

How do we take decisions and how do we throw ourselves into them?

For further joint discussions, we have taken the following issues from the simulation as a first step:
We have been working according to the Scrum model for a long time, so roles and practices should be clear. However, I noticed again that when you don't talk enough, it is easy to expect too much of the front person or product owner to make decisions for the team.
We have excellent people, but sometimes in situations where we need to throw ourselves quickly and exchange opinions, it has been a challenge. We want to do a good job and learn the ropes, so there is a threshold for quick brainstorming.

A good team can work both together and independently

In good teamwork, it is important to find a balance between what is done alone and what is done as a team. To be effective, a team needs to identify the strengths of its members and build teams within the team that can take things forward.

Another sign of a good team is a safe team. To achieve this, you need to know each other and also have fun together sometimes. Both of these developed in the simulation.

Team members recommend SmoothTeam to others

Already during the simulation, I noticed that the team clearly liked the simulation. After the simulation, I asked the team about the experience. The team members found the simulation experience useful and would recommend it to others.

I recommend SmoothTeam to every team

I also recommend SmoothTeam to every team, regardless of the sector. I would especially recommend it to a new or changing team or to an older team that has not yet discussed each other's strengths. The team does not have to be permanent, even a temporary team will benefit from the simulation.
